Landscape # 6 after Kevin MacPherson

12 inch by 16 inch oil on stretched canvas

I absolutely loved painting this one, and I think it's my favorite so far.

There are more greens in this painting than in any of the others I have tried.  Mixing greens was tricky.  I didn't use any greens straight from the tube.  I used pthalo green mixed with alizarin crimson to make the dark shadows and varied the mixture from more to less red as needed.  Ultramarine blue mixed with yellows provided the other greens.

MacPherson's painting is titled "Summertime Stillness".   His style of painting is much looser than mine is.  I don't know if I'll ever be able to achieve that.   Even though I'm using a big brush, it's difficult for me to make a bold stroke and leave it!

There are still more paintings in this book that I'd like to try, but I bought his second book, and there is so much in it that I love!  Not enough time!

  1. You did a great job on this. I loved going through your blog and seeing your progress from beginning to now. Because of your posts, I have bought Macpherson's book as well and look forward to doing landscape studies of my own.

  2. You did a great job with your greens. I agree they can be tricky but you pulled it off. The shadow colors are really lovely. Greens and blues...very restful.

  8. Virginia, I think you did a great job on capturing Kevin's painting! The small picture on your blog does not do it justice because when I clicked on the image and could see your painting in a larger format I could see much more color variation. Nicely done!

  13. Beautiful job Virginia! You're right, greens are tricky. But once you start mixing your own they become so natural and harmonious. I really think landscape could be your niche!

  14. This is an absolutely lovely painting, Virginia! I have been mixing my own greens for years, and find that they are so much more natural than what comes out of a tube. It is amazing what you can do with just the primary colors!
