Color of White Challenge

Today is the first day in several weeks that I have felt well enough to paint.  I decided to try the challenge on the Daily Paintworks website called the Color of White Challenge.  The idea was to paint a white object on a patterned fabric.  Only white and primary and secondary colors could be used.  No black, brown, burnt sienna, burnt umber, etc.   A reference photo was provided, or you could use your own set up.  I decided to use the reference photo.

My biggest challenge in this was trying to paint the fabric!  I've never painted a patterned background before.  It was trial and error.  I couldn't figure out if I should put in a color first, or the white background first.  I started in one corner, and finally liked the results better when I put down a light background and then painted the pattern on that.  I also wanted to keep this to about an hour, but that was too optimistic!

I'm not lovin' it.  But hey, I painted!

  1. C'est une réussite Virginia, parfois il ne fait pas trop se poser de question, et l'intuition vient, la peinture se fait presque toute seule et le résultat est bien là !
    bon dimanche-

  3. Hi Virginia,

Happy to hear you are feeling better. Painting takes a lot of energy. This still life is beautiful, you did a wonderful job using such a limited palette. Your handling of white is brilliant.

    All the best to you

  5. Nice one Virginia. Fabric is tricky and you got it handled. Love the color and the shadow.

  6. Virginia, I like the painting !! It's hard doing the fabric, I think. I find that I learn the most from the more difficult things I try to tackle. I just tried to paint with only 1/2" brushes, and bigger... Boy, I thought that was hard ! I kept struggling with it, though, and finally produced a respectable painting. It's not what I'm comfortable with, though, and none of us likes to get out of our 'comfort zone' -- keep it up !

  11. I love it ! Du pot irradient ces motifs colorés qui le mettent bien en valeur. Cela valait bien quelques difficultés...

  14. I have to say that you're ahead of me here. I buy loads of printed fabric and still don't have the courage to paint it. Nice job!
