Apple study

For this study, I was trying to do something that is foreign to my soul---mix each stroke separately.  So hard for me to do.  I usually blend on the painting. I actually cheated a little on this, but not on purpose.  I'd just catch myself blending a stroke into paint already on the canvas.  Habits are hard to break.

To all those blogging comrades who came by and offered kind wishes during my husband's recuperation from heart surgery, I want to extend my heartfelt thank you!  All those thoughtful notes meant a lot.  Both of us contracted some wretched virus after he'd been home about two weeks, so we were both in bed with chills and fever, feeling very weak and sickly!  I was reading and cruising your blogs, but not feeling up to commenting much.

We are both much improved now.  He has been checked out by his doctors and cleared to drive again!  So first thing this morning, he took his car to fill it up and get it washed.  We are ready for the weekend!

Hope you all have a great weekend.  I am so looking forward to getting in some painting time.

  2. Hi Virginia, I am glad you are back and getting healthy!

  3. So glad you and your husband are better now. Wonder if you picked something up at the hospital? Anyhoo....this is very nice. Love the bit of blue in the background. Great composition too. Good luck and glad to see you painting!

  4. Martine--that's a great idea. Put those troubles in a box! Thanks Elizabeth and Carol. So glad to be well.

  5. Really nice painting and glad you are feeling better and your husband also! Now you can focus on spring coming and lots of painting time. Love your work- look forward to seeing more.

  6. Virginia, so glad you are both feeling better!! I bet your husband is feeling free now that he can drive again:) I hope you have a sunshine filled weekend and are back to 100% soon! Love your apples, they looks so fresh and vibrant:)

  7. I'm glad you're both feeling better. I was wondering where you were.
Is this the direction you want to go overall? For me, it seems to depend on my mood and the subject, whether it's loose. And the painting surface.
I like the background colors and structure. The apples don't have as much highlight as in other paintings, but they have good shapes and colors. Nice work.

  8. Glad to hear that you both are doing better! Look forward to seeing more of your work!

  9. I had the same trouble on the "different color per stroke challenge". It's hard to do. You did a great job! I'm glad you and your husband are feeling better. Hope you had a wonderful weekend!

  10. Heureuse de savoir que vous allez mieux: bientôt la reprise de la peinture et tout ira encore mieux. Bonne continuation et créations!
    bises cath.

  11. Glad you are feeling better Virginia!! The apples look very solid!! I like!

  12. Dear Virginia,

I am so happy your husband is okay. My husband had quadruple bypass 8 yrs. ago and he is better than ever. Thank God, it's amazing the medical technology that exist today. Both of you stay well. Maybe eat one of the those apples. Great painting.

    all the best to you

  13. I see a breakthrough! This seems so much more alive with the different strokes allowed to "just be." You got great values and dimension and so much variety in the colors of the background and shadows . . .
Habits are so hard to break but it's good to shake things up and try things that take you out of your comfort zone. You may at some point decide you prefer a more polished look, but then you'll be making a choice instead of operating out of habit. And you'll learn a lot about mixing values which is valuable even in refined paintings. Really good to know you and your husband are well again!

  14. You're on your way!! Best to you both**
