Sliced limes and cocktail

I am still on a quest to alter my painting style.  I'm trying to use more colors.  By that I don't mean more colors on my palette, but trying to see more colors in the objects I am painting.  I used a lot of alizarin crimson in this painting for the darks and shadows.  In the past I would have used ultramarine blue and burnt umber to make a dark.  I like the tint of red that the alizarin gives to the darks.

(This is a fake cocktail.  It's colored water.  But that doesn't sound as good in a title!)  Anyway, there's a chilled bottle of Riesling wine in the fridge, and my hubby just called that he's on his way home.  Have a good weekend!

  1. Wonderful painting. I can appreciate your quest to "see" the colors that are there. I am learning that the value of them is even more important. This looks great and I love the shadows- just perfect color and value:) Glass of wine sounds like a good reward- enjoy!

  2. I love the color of the coctail! You could have fooled me! I also like the shadows and the bit of alizarin mixture in the glass. Thanks for leaving really is appreciated.

  3. Really loving the color combinations in this piece. I like the alizarin crimson. Very refreshing:) Have a great rest of your weekend:)

  4. Kathy, you are right. If the values aren't right it doesn't matter whether the colors are "pretty".

  5. I enjoyed caching up with your blog Virginia. Went back and read Jeff Mahorneys post you mentioned. Really good.
I am really liking this piece. The softness of your brushwork, comp, values, color harmony .....all working. Congratulations!

  6. Sounds like you are having a nice weekend. The colors are really working for you. This is sure a nice painting

  7. Virginia... How was your Riesling? your cocktail looks tempting, even if it is a fake ! I think your use of color is very perceptive ! I also want to thank you for all your kind comments, for so long ! I had a glitch in my blogger site, and just figured it out... until today it has not let me leave comments... so frustrating... But finally I can communicate with you,,,keep up the good work, Virginia !

  8. A great composition Virginia!! Keep up the great work!!

  9. this is a very nice painting. Very Cezanne!
Another fabulous dark is alizarin and Thalo green/viridian.
About the fake cocktail. I was painting a martini and actually opened an unopened bottle of gin to use in it. My hubby couldn't believe it!
We don't drink gin either soooooo it's a prop right?
    Enjoy your wonderful trip Virginia.
