My first cat painting

And it may be the last!  I painted this in response to the Daily Paintworks challenge.  I started out wanting this to look like the cat in the reference photo, but I ended up just hoping it looked like a cat!

I have a new-found respect for those artists who paint animals.  I thought portrait painting was difficult, but I think this is just as difficult.

I had to smile at myself that Carol Marine wouldn't be pleased at the number of brushstrokes in this painting.   There are hundreds.  I had no idea how to paint fur.  I started out with a number eight filbert, but it makes such smooth strokes I couldn't get any indication of  "furry-ness".   At the end, I switched to a small bright brush.    Well, this was my adventure for today.   Now I'm going out to dinner with my husband.  Probably even enjoy a glass of white wine.

  1. It looks great Virginia! I think you did a fantastic job. :) Any kind of face isn't easy in my opinion, but like anything else, the more you do, the 'easier' it gets. Enjoy your dinner out!

  3. Virginia - I think this came out wonderful. First thing I said when I saw the thumbnail was "she painted a sweet little fuzzy kitten" so I think all your hard work paid off.

  5. Thanks, Kevin. I've always loved cats, but never understood why people like dogs. Until now. Now I have grand-dogs.
Nan, your cat is so fantastic! I wanted to have blocks of color like yours, but I just couldn't make that happen.
Kathy, thank you so much for your encouragement.
Crystal, you are such a fantastic painter of both people and animals! Thank you for visiting and commenting.

  6. Looks terrific, Virginia!! The fur is perfect and you got the eyes spot on. I think the eyes can be the hardest parts of a portrait, animal or otherwise. Awesome job. I've been debating whether or not to attack the dpw challenge this week, we'll see:) Enjoy your wine, oh and your date:)

  19. Virginia, I think you did a great job! I think painting a likeness of any living thing is difficult as we expect our work to catch all the nuances of personality as well! Your cat's expression is perfect - the eyes, the mouth, the glance. If this is your FIRST cat, I certainly hope you do more.
