Plate of Figs
When figs first appeared in the market last month, I thought $7.98 a pound was too much to pay. Now they are more abundant and the price has been reduced, so I bought some to paint. After I finished painting, I ate them with honey. Yum.
I used a different brush today, a bright, very stiff. My usual go-to brush is a filbert, very smooth, and the paint goes on like butter. But I'm trying to paint more loosely, so I changed my brush. I liked some of the effects I got, but I found it very difficult to mix paint with the brush.

Sounds yummy--looks yummy! I like soft brushes too. It's probably good to try different ones though.
ReplyDeleteWonderful painting- love all the color harmony and the shadows. Fun to try new brushes. I like using bigger ones now because it does make brushwork look so good. Looks great here:) Yum too- figs with honey!
ReplyDeleteHere, the figs are not still mature, we have several fig trees around us, and they are interessant to paint. Your colors are interesting, and I like the beige of your plate.
ReplyDeleteI like your color choices, and especially the pattern of figs and shadows. The only figs I've eaten are inside Fig Newtons!
ReplyDeleteYou have been busy with your move and family and it is not so easy to settle back into a routine to paint. The summer months are full. I like your fig painting and thanks for sharing your brush choices. I keep adding to my brush inventory as my needs change.
ReplyDeleteMouth wateringly yummy! Great summery composition. Love the colors. Your background makes the yellowy green areas of the fig just pop out and gives them a vibrancy and energy!
ReplyDeleteThe shadows are full of depth and beauty!

Thank you everyone for your kind comments. Karen, the figs in Fig Newtons can't compare to a ripe fig drizzled with honey.
ReplyDeleteNice painting. I like the shadows. Did you tone the canvas with yellow first, or add the yellow that's in the shadows on the plate?
ReplyDeleteLovely color harmony, Virginia!
ReplyDeleteSans pinceau et sans cuillère, ces figues me semblent tellement délicieuses que je veux bien faire l'essai avec les doigts!!!
ReplyDeleteDe très belles nuances de couleurs...
gros bisous.
Martine, I did eat them without a spoon. I just drizzled a little honey on the sliced fig and ate them with my fingers. Then licked my fingers. Yum!
ReplyDeleteCaladh, thank you. The shadows were my favorite part too. I painted the shadows first with a block of color as I was laying color in on the painting. Then I added more color over that as I continued to paint.
I think it's beautiful Virginia! I like the look of this with the stiffer brush, that was a good choice. :) And I have never had fresh figs before, bet that was a treat.
ReplyDeleteI really like your palette and especially those great gray colors in the shadows. Glad to see you're getting in the swing again!
ReplyDeleteThank you Virginia for your inspiring comments!

Well, let's starts by saying figs are probably my favorite food, period! And they look so fun in a circle on the plate! I'm sorry you're not happy with your brush. Try Princeton 6300 series. My friends and I all love them...
ReplyDeleteWho can resist figs and I love your presentation of them.
