You Say Tomato
This one wasn't as easy as the bottles. I liked the colors as I was painting, but at the end of the session I decided I had been too timid with the highlights and too "vigorous" with the stems and leaves. So the next day I worked on those areas, increasing the highlights and painting over some leaves. I like it better now, but I'm not in love with it.
I did learn something. I used cad red and viridian green and then added titanium white to create a grayed highlight. The green and red I also used to create some of the shadow areas on the tomatoes.
I think I probably should work on more than one painting at once, because I find that I am painting in blocks of color that become the underpainting. Then I add more paint the next day. It's hard for me to finish a painting in one day. If I had two going, maybe I could alternate drying days.

How are you Virgina, this tomato looks perfect ,
ReplyDeleteit's true if we start 2 or three paintings at once it makes us to thinnk and come up with somemore ideas ...
thanks a tone for your comment i will do this techni in my next portrait.
I think you did a wonderful job on these tomatoes Virginia. I love the background color you chose. It brings out the fruit. Great shading as well. I also want to thank you for the web site you gave Anu on painting the human eyes. I sometimes have problems and found it very informative.
ReplyDeleteYour tomatoes are beautiful!!! You have done a fabulous job. I wonder if you toned down the background if you would like it more. I love the composition and your tomatoes are spot on and red can be a difficult one to master and you've done it!!
ReplyDeleteGood job on these tomatoes, Virginia! I like the stems and the tomatoes look good enough to eat.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first started my blog it took me 6-7 hours to paint one 6x6 (should I even admit that? :-)) Now I do it much quicker - thankfully! I think it takes a lot of practice and that is part of this fantastic journey! Always learning.
These tomatoes are luscious Virginia! You've used my favourite colour palette, so this is one of my favourite paintings that you've done. :-)
Bisous
I love these ! These are those genetically modified ones like the painting I did recently. Somehow the tomatoes nowadays look too perfect, don't you think?- Anyhoo, I really think you did an awesome job. Thanks for sharing your painting experience, too !
ReplyDeleteGreat job on this. Beautiful color combination!
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone! I woke up this morning and found all these wonderful comments!
ReplyDeleteCarrie, I think the background yellow photographed brighter than it is in real life.
Claire, I really like bright, warm colors, also. They are so happy! I've tried painting with dark backgrounds, and so far I haven't mastered that.
Beautiful tomatoes, Virginia, and I'll try cad red+viridian+white, thank"s!
ReplyDeleteVirginia! This is gorgeous and you should be in love with it! I think you may be stricken by that psychological state I sometimes struggle with where I can't seem to recognize what's good in my work. That's when it's so helpful to get feedback and then you have to trust it. Way to go!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lorraine! Unfortunately, when I look at my paintings, I see the mistakes and faults--it's like they jump out at me. I can tell that I've improved from my beginning paintings, though, so that's a good thing.
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate your positive feedback! Thanks again!
I have to say that it's a pretty wonderful thing that you decided to paint again...your work is beautiful! I look forward to seeing more!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting, Claire.
ReplyDeleteIt's really beautiful Virginia! I think you've got the highlights just right, and the colors of the tomatoes are perfect! :)
ReplyDeleteI like the golden background for the red tomatoes. So vibrant!
ReplyDeleteI like the position of the tomatoes and you got some very nice reflection and shine.
ReplyDeleteI LIKE the stems! Not too much at all....nice spiky contrast to those meaty forms.
ReplyDeleteThey look so plump and healthy--and the painting has a nice color harmony with the warm orangy hues below the tomatoes!
ReplyDeleteThank to Tempy, Caladh, Jean and Diane!
ReplyDeletegreat drawing and I love the color harmony. I think those tomatoes are great for still life but lacking in taste :D
