Landscape # 10 after Kevin MacPherson
12" X 16" oil on stretched canvas
MacPherson called his painting "Cottonwood Camp". I loved the way the rays of the setting sun touched the trees in this landscape. It was also fascinating to see the colors that MacPherson used in the foliage. These are entirely different greens than those in the mid-day sun. I was mixing colors that looked almost like khaki to me. This one is my new favorite.
I have another one on my easel. Again, it's in warm colors. I think I'm going to have to try a cool painting just to force myself out of my comfort zone.

I love the way you handled the light and the greens...you are so spot on with the colors. It is very inviting.
ReplyDeletelovely!!! You did a great job, Virginia!
ReplyDeleteYou just get better and better! The golden light is terrific- super work Virginia.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Mary! You just get better and better!!!
ReplyDeleteThis has such a lovely lyrical feel with the golden light on the trees—so graceful!
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutely beautiful, Virginia!! Love those greens!!
ReplyDeleteThe trees just glow in the rays of the sun. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteTerrific, you really captured that light on the trees!
ReplyDeleteYou did a fabulous job with this. I can see the difference since you started this project. Can you "feel" the difference as well as see it?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Julie. I think I have gotten more free and I have more confidence than when I started. So yes, I can feel the difference.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to drop by and thank you for your comments on my blog. Very kind of you. You have taken on a very interesting project!!! Working through KM book. WHat a good way to learn. I used to do that with van Gogh, Gauguin and a few others....then would give them to my children...smile! It is a very excellent way to learn. You are doing a terrific job....you must feel that you are making progress! And a Carol Marine workshop, how special....she isn't easy to get into. You make good choices as you improve your art....smiles: sharon
ReplyDeleteVirginia, this painting is lovely. Kevin MacPherson would be so proud of your work. Well done.
ReplyDeleteI just popped over here to your blog Virginia to see what you've been up to and I'm very impressed!! You just get better and better with every painting. LOVE these landscapes! You are right on with the colors -- warm and delicious. What a great method for learning and you are growing by leaps and bounds! I too agree with you about layering -- I think it really develops a richness in the painting that can't otherwise be achieved. I'm envious of your ability to simplify and capture the light and mood in your landscapes. Something that continues to elude me. Keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Kara. I can't really take the credit, as I am copying! I am learning, though. At some point I'll try to strike out on my own.
ReplyDeleteExcellent Virginia! I've been observing a lot of Cottonwood this last week and you've caught them well. You really got the color mixing down right too.
ReplyDeleteimpressive work!
ReplyDeleteTerrific painting. Each painting is more lovely than the one before. I like the soft light and how you cut-in the sky and landscape through the trees. Love your warm colors too.
ReplyDeleteVirginia, I love your serie after MacPherson, I didn't know cottonwoods, and your colours are lovely, I am waiting for your next landscape!
ReplyDeleteThis just flows. Love it
