Vase and Oranges

This little study was an experiment.  I saw a challenge on the DPW website to paint a color painting of a black and white photo.  There was a black and white photo in one of my art books, so I thought I'd try to paint it in color.

The background color is a big mistake.  I premixed colors and I thought they looked good on the palette, but I don't like them in the painting.

Claudia Hammer had a funny post of a painting she wasn't happy with.   She said that people would point and laugh at it.   Claudia is a terrific artist, so her idea of a failure is at a lot higher level than mine.  So please, no pointing and laughing.  If you must snicker, please cover your mouth.

  2. I smiled when I read your post. I love the composition! I think the background color works pretty well. What's wrong with it? I like the subtle color shifts. The stick makes it so interesting. And about one of your previous posts: Don't you dare go burn all your paintings! Save them so you can see your progress!

  3. I like this one and appreciate when anyone tries a challenge or something new. Keeps it fresh and interesting. I always think back to how kind everyone was when I first started painting and posted some doozies:) I really like the colors here and the brushwork. Good for you- no snickering here friend:)

  5. Un challenge pas si mal mené... quoique vous en dites ma chère...
Et je ne ricane pas... des couleurs qui se marient parfaitement bien.
Gros bisous et merci pour votre gentil message.

  6. Virginia--I like the background of your painting. I see the brush strokes and it looks like you used more paint (don't be afraid of using even more with a big brush for experimentation), but most important, you varied the color from warm to cool. That is something that people often miss when they are painting objects--that depending on the light there is a warm side and a cool side and often it is a difference in the same color--between a warm red and a cool red or a warm green and a cool green. I also like the way you did the front panel of the table--it is loose and has a wonderful variation of color.
